Paragraph:

  • clear topic sentence                                                        
  • all sentences support the topic                                         
  • sentences vary in length                                                  
  • paragraphs concludes effectively                                           

 

Sentences:

  • complete no run-ons or fragments                              
  • subject and verbs agree                                                   
  • correct tense                                                            

 

Words:

  • spelled correctly                                                                  
  • used appropriately for the purpose                                     
  • proper nouns capitalized                                                     

 

Punctuation:

  • used appropriately at end of sentences                                  
  • commas used for :
  • phrases                                                                   
  • lists                                                               
  • before conjunctions so / but                                     

 

Rubric for an Essay

Essay:

  • clear introductory paragraph (thesis statement)                                                     
  • all paragraphs support the introduction    
  • transition words are used effectively                                                    
  • the conclusion restates the thesis
  • purpose is clear
